About Doug

Doug Townsend is a contemporary photographer whose abstract figurative work deals with his emotive state. He studied photography at the University of Saskatchewan from 1973 – 79, and with the members of The Photographers Gallery during that time. As well as the Banff Centre 1979 – 80, Apeiron Workshops N.Y. 1980 -81 and completed his Curatorial Internship at the Art Gallery of Memorial University (now the Rooms) 1994-95.

He has exhibited throughout Canada including: The Mendel Art Gallery – Saskatoon (solo), Eastern Edge Gallery – NFLD (solo), Mackenzie Art Gallery – Regina (solo), The Photographers Gallery (solos), Dunlop Art Gallery – Regina, SK Expo (world expo 86) Pavilion – Vancouver, Alberta College of Art Gallery –Calgary, Jane Corkin Gallery – Toronto. He is represented in the Collections of: The Moose Jaw Art Museum – Moose Jaw SK., Remai Modern (Mendel collection) – Saskatoon, The Canada Council – Ottawa, The Saskatchewan Arts Board – Regina, The Banff Centre – AB, The University of Saskatchewan.

From 1986 – 92 he worked as the Director/Curator of The Photographers Gallery (now PAVED Arts) and Managing Editor of BLACKFLASH magazine. From 1992 – 2015 he worked as Visual and Media Arts Consultant for the Saskatchewan Arts Board.
